Education

We offer a variety of Educational courses taught by NRA Instructors and Coaches, from Basic Handgun and Rifle to Personal Protection In the Home. Because our Coarses are open to the public, you do not have to be a member to enroll. However, after you see what we have to offer, we hope you'll want to become One-Of-Us!

We can also advise you on how to select a firearm. Any way you look at it, the Towanda Rifle & Pistol Club is your "Go-To" source for any questions related to firearms.

Basic Handgun and its Application for Personal Defense

This is a unique course that had its origins in the NRA Personal Defense in the Home course. It has been modified and contributed to by prior instructors (veterans of many prestigious advanced schools). It has been offered for the over 25 years at the Towanda Rifle and Pistol Club. It stresses commonly accepted Universal Gun Safety Rules and spends time on the range using more practical and realistic targets and is shot at typical defensive distances. Safety and Defensive Mindset are at the core of its approach. We stress Jeff Cooper’s principals of self defense and starts the course assuming the student has no prior handgun experience. It is not a concealed carry course but outside the home scenarios are discussed and acquiring a PA carry permit is recommended. 250 rounds of centerfire ammunition and 50 rounds of rimfire ammunition are fired during the course. The student does not necessarily have to provide a handgun of his own. Loaners in 380 ACP, 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP and 38 Special are available on a first come first served basis for use during the shooting sessions. This is a 7 week course usually offered on Wednesday evenings at the club indoor range. Most find the course serious but fun
